This election is going to be a mess. I can see it already. Due to the closeness of the polls, no matter who is "declared" the winner by the networks, both candidates will claim victory and wait for all the recounts to finish, all the while both sides will go at each other with vicious accusations. It will be ugly -- much uglier than the "hanging chad" debacle of 2000. I'm disppointed by this, because after 2000 I figured we would develop a system of computerized voting that would be tamper-proof -- I mean, that month-and-a-half delay after the last election was embarassing to the nation and our whole political system, so we've got four years to fix it, right? How hard could that be? Heck, we put a man on the moon...31 years ago! But no, with a couple weeks to go until the 2004 election, I'm reading stories about corrupt voting machines, early voting scandal, candidates already claiming they plan to protest the results, etc...and we haven't even started yet. I don't know who to blame for this. Political parties? The media? Microsoft? All the while, other nations are either laughing or losing even more respect for us. I'll say this...whoever does officially win this one, they'll have the hardest presidential term in history staring them in the face. Good luck...we all need it.
